Lima is the capital of Peru. It was founded by Francisco Pizarro on January 18th, 1535, near the Rimac River on the central coast of Peru. It has a growing population of about 10 million inhabitants. It is the biggest and most important city of Peru. It is a modern city where you can still find centers of beautiful colonial architecture.
Lima surroundings:
Pachacamac, located about 40 km SE of Lima, are the ruins of a very important pre-Inca and Inca shrine having now a modern site museum,
Pachacamac, which contains a number of pyramids, was considered one of the most important religious monuments by the indigenous people of the central Andes. Spanish historical records, along with extensive archaeological research at the site, have served to clarify its history and significance.
Caral, located 150 km north of Lima on the Pan American Highway, Caral is the oldest pre-Inca civilization in America, dating back to more than 3000 years BC. It is an ancient city in a remote Peruvian valley, more than 4,900 years old – – far older than any known city in this hemisphere and old enough to rewrite the history of the New World – according to a finding reported in the current Journal of Science.

A rich historical past, amazing geography and beautiful landscapes make Cusco a city that every traveler yearns to visit. The city of Cusco, together with nearby Machu Picchu and the Urubamba Sacred Valley, are the most important tourist destination in Peru and one of the most famous in South America. Cusco is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the continent.
Known by the Incas as the “Home of the Gods”, Cusco was the capital of one of the greatest Pre- Hispanic empires: the Tawantinsuyo.
Cusco is a colonial style city with cultural diversity, splendid temples and residences built on Inka finely carved rock walls and foundations, and surrounded by impressive Inka monumental temples and fortresses.
It also houses one of the most notable painting schools in this part of the continent, the Cusquenian School of Painting.

Read more about Machu Picchu
Also known as “The Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu was built circa 1450 and abandoned only 100 years later. The purpose of this splendid city is still a mystery to modern historians. Enjoy exploring the ancient citadel and marveling at the imposing Temple of the Sun, the House of the Priest, the Sacred Plaza and the intricately carved rock, the Intiwatana, likely used as a sundial by the ancient Incas.
If you visit Machu Picchu as part of a day tour you'll usually have about 4 hours at the ruins themselves; 2 hours of which is taken up by a guide tour. You'll also have to share the ruins with the 2500 or so other tourists who visit the ruins every day.
The ruins open at 6am and close at 4:00 pm.
The mountain overlooking Machu Picchu is called Wayna Picchu and can be climbed to get great views of the whole site. Allow 2½ hours return trip – not recommended for sufferers of vertigo. The narrow trail can be quite dangerous at times after wet weather. The path entrance is open first group from 7am to 8am. And second group from 10am to 11am but you must return before 3pm.
Another similar panoramic option, less vertical but longer than Wayna Picchu, is mountain Machu Picchu, the climb starts short after leaving the ruins, walking on the Inca Trail towards the IntiPunku (Gate of the Sun). From its summit view is just as spectacular.
You must ask for the fee to Machupicchu including Wayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain in advance. There are only 400 entrance tickets per day for each one and might be sold out.
